China group and GJDC China and Pacific Islander Representative- Dr. Nicoleen Johnson

Bio:

Dr. Nicoleen Johnson

Global Jamaica Diaspora Council Representative for Asia and Pacific Region

Nicoleen Johnson, PhD

Dr. Nicoleen Johnson hails from Bethel Town, Westmoreland and is a graduate of Herbert Morrison Technical High School and The University of Technology. She has lived, studied and worked in Shanghai, China since 1997 and established her career as a China Market Expert . With a background in Marketing and International Relations, she is currently the Owner/General Manager of Global Connections Gateway, a Shanghai based Trade and Travel Consulting firm, assisting companies and governments from around the world to do business in China.

Dr. Johnson is a pioneer and connector at heart and this is reflected in her many accomplishments. She overcame many obstacles, including learning Mandarin, and is the first Jamaican to graduate with both a Masters and a PhD. from a prestigious Chinese University.

In the past 23 years, Dr Johnson has been pivotal in building relationships, both  intra-China and equally with the international community.  She is the founding President and current board member of both the first Caribbean Association China (CAC) established in 2007 as well as the first Jamaican Association of China (JAC) established in 2019. Coordinating numerous events for the Expat community in Shanghai and for Jamaican Government Agencies is just one area that distinguishes Nicoleen from other Jamaicans in the region. She was instrumental in the establishment of both the first Jamaican Direct Investment in Shanghai in 2005 and the first Jamaican Restaurant in Shanghai in 2007.  Currently she is an active leader in Shanghai Community Fellowship and also leads a Women’s Group responsible for encouraging and empowering women in the community.

Dr. Johnson is an avid traveler.  Having visited every country in South East Asia and recently completing a milestone of her 60th country visit in the world. She has established strong connections in many regions worldwide.

Dr. Johnson will no doubt use this wealth of experience to carry out her mandate as the GJDC representative for her region.

Multi-Jurisdictional Lawyer / Canadian Representative, Global Jamaica Diaspora Council

About Me:

  • Specializes in advocating on global affairs affecting business, the law and social justice
  • Committed to community education and empowerment
  • Admitted to practice to law before the Bars of Ontario, Canada and Jamaica
  • A Canadian Representative on the Global Jamaica Diaspora Council

Who I Am

Toronto-born Lawyer, Nailah Gordon-Decicieo, is recognized as an important voice in the new generation of advocates. She is one of the first Canadian Lawyers to receive the ‘Nation’s Best Advocates: Top 40 Under 40’ Award and presently represents Canada as an elected member of the Global Jamaica Diaspora Council. Nailah’s commitment to advancing the voice of Jamaican – Canadians is influenced by her family’s humble beginnings in St. Elizabeth and Kingston. Guided by Jamaica’s ethos of hard work, she earned an Honours Bachelor of Commerce and a Minor in Economics from McMaster University (2008), graduated with a Juris Doctor from the University of Windsor (2012) in Canada and holds a Legal Education Certificate from the Norman Manley Law School (2018) in Jamaica. Since her admission to practice law before both the Bars of Ontario, Canada and Jamaica, Nailah focuses on making an impact, both inside and outside of the courtroom. When she is not advancing and protecting her clients’ interests, she enjoys presenting on issues affecting business, the law, and social justice. She is known for educating and empowering others to make a difference for our society. Nailah currently chairs the Deciding Committee of the Jamaican-Canadian Community Emergency Response Fund (COVID-19), designed to temporarily relieve the basic needs of vulnerable Jamaican-Canadians during this time. Advocating for change during a pandemic, expands Nailah’s knowledge of the current challenges and opportunities facing the Diaspora in Canada. This equips her with the ability to simplify and explain to others the complex issues facing Jamaican-Canadians and to strategize culturally-conscious solutions.
